Seen the same pic on his facebook page and I was wrong, its not overexposed. I guess the change to b&w made it look that way to me. I do like the color version better though because the eyes stand out more. The color in them is very nice.

I see! well I can understand if you have a lot to shoot you want to save space.. but does a magazine demand so many pictures to choose from when they end up using only a few? I don't want to critizise you in any way, I'm curious since I'm shooting a lot of MX myself

Hi there,

I live in Sala (Sala Silvergruva)

The reason for me not shooting Raw at the racetrack is my camera buffer and amount of images I get.

When I am at a race and covering that event for a newspaper or website, I easily get 1500+ images, a 16 gb card hold about 400 raw images or more than 1900 jpg images.

But if I do a photoshoot of a single rider or any other work - Then I always shoot raw för more options in postprocessing

Sounds like I spray and prey, and to some parts it is, and alot of images in sequences (to pick the best one).

Nice to se other swedes finding this good community

My first remark is about the 1/60 shutterspeed. I find this too low to shoot proper headshots or people in general unless there really isnt enough light to get the ambient in. In these shots there was enough ambient appearently and I wouldve upped it to at least 1/125 and this would have added to the atmosphere.
In 3 you used the 2.8 to blow out fore/background but I dont really see the need for the 2.8 in the first 2 images.

As for the harshness of the shadows I believe the brolly is either small or was pretty far away from the subject. On the headshots I would advice you te bring the brolly in as close as possible just out of frame so it becomes a large lightsource giving softer light and quick fall off on the subject.

I'm no expert on off camera lighting, but I'd try find another angle for the flash that didn't cast harsh shadows on the wall behind the subject. At those settings, maybe the flash unit was too high? As you have a lot of natural light coming in the side, you wonly really needed fill side lighting it seems.

The first image, if you'd have the brolly set up in front, in near the wall, you'd not have gotten the harsh shadow.

Pretty much same for the second. Looks like you had it set up to the subject's right, firing at the wall. Just experiment with positions and angles and power settings I'd say.

Hi all, this is my first post for critique. These images is one before (small adjustments in lightroom) and after edit in photoshop cs5.

I don´t know if I should post this in beginner section or intemediate, I see myself as a amateur with experience, but beginner in photoedits, and I am just starting to learn photoshop.

The exif on these photos are:

Shutter: 1/800
Apeture: f5.0
Iso: 250

Shot in Shutterpriority mode, no flash

Camera and lens: canon eos 600d and tamron 55-200 f4-5.6

First image (small edit in lightroom, exposure, clarity, saturation, cropped a little for better placement of "rule of thirds")

second on edit in photoshop with presets from Nik Software (brilliance, Warmth) applied look from Magic Bullet looks to boost tone....

Now there are some issues with the lens and sharpness, this lens will be thrown out and replaced.

What do you think about this edit? is it too much. Does the photo work?

BTW I can take critique so fire away, this is one of the best ways to actually learn to become better... I´m also a happy snapper/person

Here are my two work/play areas. First one is my living room where I keep my M18x 95% of the time. Second is my bedroom where I just bought the desk last week. That's why the area is so empty at the moment, I'll update it as things get bought and come in the mail.

:adjusted temp
:Brought shadows up all the way brought whites and black down.
:Added some clarity vibrance and saturation, all low levels.
:Brought in a graduated filter coming up to darken flowers but keep body lit.
:Used brush to raise exposure on hat , and brushed to lower exposure on the body.
:Finished product.

I think johnny boy got it backwards, a wideangle lens-designed for full frame camera will be magnified on a DX or crop sensor camera. 1.5x on a Nikon. A 28mm full frame lens has the effective focal length of 42mm on DX.
This is because the full frame sensor is larger. The lenses for these cameras has to fill a sensor with a larger area. On the smaller DX sensor, the sensor sees only sees the light from the center of the lens, the outside isnt recorded... It is cropped off.
This is only a factor if you need to go wide. As it takes a specially designed lens to take the wide angle view and focus the light to a smaller area. On a full frame camera, the DX wideangle lens has circular vignette, kind of comparable to an extreme fish eye effect.
When going telephoto the crop can work in your favor. As you get additional magnification for no loss of light and you are using the center of the lens, which is commonly reffered to the sweet spotb. It is less apt to vignetting, sharpnesss issues, aberations, and has better color and contrast than the edges of the lens. Of course these factors vary by lens and manufacturer.

Good pic but in my mind it is overexposed. I read your story in your other post. My advice, keep shooting. Someday your pictures will be all you have and you will be thankful that you took a lot of them. I had a brother that died with cerebral palsy and I wish I had more pics of him around.

I'm assuming you own one camera, so...the lower the focal length, the wider the angle. Don't worry so much about the crop factor. What are you looking for? What kind of photos do you take?

Hello all!

My name is Henrik, I live in the middle of Sweden in a small town, with my wife and our 3 kids.

My photographic adventure started back in 1997 when I was a sailor, Minolta Dynax analogue camera was my first, I did shoot for a couple of years. In 2010 I bought my first dslr, a Canon eos 400d, but now I have the Canon 600d and I like it alot.

I am currently work as a security guard and have a motorsportsite called RedAkt.se that I maintain with news, photos, videos and more.

I am shooting pretty much anything, but my main interest is motorsport and other forms of action.... by the way the photo in my profile are me riding back in 1986...

I am shooting Swedish National Championship in motocross this year (my first race to cover is in june 9) I´m thrilled and it will be great to get access to the track for some up close photos..

What´s in my bag then:

Canon eos 600d
Canon Kit lens 18-55
Canon 50 f1.8 II
(Tamron 55-200 f/4-5.6) needs to be replaced and will be at the end of this month (may)
Canon 70-200 f4 L USM

4 batteries, 2 16 gb cards, cleaning cloth

Oh and I shoot RAW most of the time but not at the racetrack.

Now I am done rambeling - I´m glad to be here and I will try to help as good as I can, so if you are wondering anything - just ask!

Thanks to the tech savviness of Nikon, the money in my pocket, and the great instruction of Jared and Adam. Without any of these I would not have gone from a point and shooter to professional photographer in 8+ hours at teh Fro boot camp...see ya day job!! @phil, thanks for the words of encouragement. As for some of my reasoning: They insisted on a noon shoot at this park. Not a lot of shade. I was trying to overpower the sun in some shots with my flash to brighten their faces and I was just closing/opening my aperture to work with the flash, thats why some are so high. I was a little nervous to go below 5.6 on these because I had done some family pictures back at christmas time and one of the members was slightly out of focus. As for their interactions, they had arrived a half hour late because they had been fighting, so I took what I could get, haha. Thanks for the help and I'd love to see some of your pics.

They're nice but I'd stop the lens down a bit more to get some more sharpness. You have room to play with looking at the shutter speeds and ISO levels.

I prefer the 1st one but the other bird in it is quite distracting, not as much as the leaves in the second however.

Thanks, I'm doing these just for fun and to get more hands on with my photography, I think it will help me to understand it all better and hopefully will reflect in my digital work too. Plus it's loads of fun to see it all come together!

It's taken with a 28mm F/2.8 macro lens @ F/11 I think, ISO 100 - Not sure of the shutter speed but I think it was pretty high, somewhere around 1/500

The print was made at F/16 for 55 seconds and then I burned in the sea for another 15 all with a grade 3 filter.

To put it very short...ANY lens mounted on a DX body will have it's focal length multiplied by 1.5 on nikon and 1.6 on Canon bodies.

No worries, glad to help!

But you're still misunderstanding it.

Your kit lens is say 18-55mm and say the wide angle you are looking at is 11mm.

In full frame terms the kit lens is about 27-80mm, and the 11mm is about 16mm.

Ie every lens is multiplied by the crop factor, whether it is a DX lens, AF-S lens, AF lens etc etc.

So an 11mm lens is always wider than an 18mm lens on the same body.

Clearer?

That was what I had in mind and was kind of worried about. The reason for this question was used AF lenses are cheaper and easier to come by (usually) than AF-S. If I spend the money on a wide angle I definitely want to get the most out of it, but I would hate to buy, say something in the 11mm range and end up getting about an 18mm out of it which would be something like a kit lens (in focal length, quality will definitely differ)

Hi Jeff, welcome to the forum!

My advice would be dont worry about crop factor unless you are regularly switching between full frame and crop sensor cameras, which you are clearly not. Just get used to what say 20mm looks like on your camera, or what say 50mm looks like on your camera. There is no need to worry about what 20mm or 50mm looks like on somebody elses camera.

But to answer your question, i think you have it the wrong way around. Crop sensor cameras induce a crop in lenses, generally of about 1.5 times. So a 20mm lens on a crop sensor looks like a 30mm lens on a full frame camera. Or a 100mm lens on a crop camera, looks like a 150mm lens on a full frame camera.

Hope that answers your question and clears some stuff up!

With cameras such as the Nikon D80/90 and similar models you have the ability to use normal AF and also AF-S lenses. Many of the older AF lenses are made for full frame which on a cropped sensor ends up with a slightly different focal distances than what the lens is claimed to be.

If you were to put a wide angle lens designed for full frame on a cropped sensor camera, would this result in a wider angle shot but cause you to lose that wide angle " look and feel" ?

Here is a trick. Mount the lens normally. Set the aperture to 5.6 or 8 whatever you need it to. Press and hold the depth of field preview button. Keep holding the button then unmount the lens. The lens will hold whatever aperture it was set at. Then attach you tubes and you are good to go. The next time you reattach your lens the aperture will reset.

This is how I do it.

Hi guys,

so it's taken a little longer than I'd have hoped but today I finally got round to doing a printing session in the darkroom!

I processed my first roll of Ilford Delta 100 film a couple weeks ago and chose some Ilford MGIV 5x7" paper to do my printing on.

I love being able to take a picture, develop the film and then print it and to see the whole process through, it's very rewarding!

Below are a couple of the prints I made today, photographed on my digital camera. Unfortunately the whites aren't as white as they are in real life but you get an idea.

If you have photoshop, you might try taking that second picture and using two layers with different exposures. One exposed for the sky and the second layer exposed for the planes. With the sharp edges of the planes, it should be pretty easy to get a good layer mask. This will result in a very nice image I think. It's not really HDR, but you are using PP to get a good exposure for both sky and subject.

If you only have Lightroom, you can probably use the adjustment brush to brush in a brighter exposure on the planes. Use a small brush towards the edges and turn on the "automask" feature.

Hello Everyone,

I just bought my first film camera, and got it in yesterday:

Put my first roll of film in last night and shot a couple of candids while trying to get the camera figured out.

As of right now i have a 24 2.8, and a 135 2.8 for it, with the intention of getting a 50 1.4 and 85 2.0, and possibly a 35 1.4 or 35 2.0.

Are there any other must have lenses, or tips/suggestions for someone decently experienced with digital but new to film?

I like the shots but they look overexposed. Maybe try a ND filter next time. I'm going to be attempting this as well. So if I can get it right maybe I will have some pointers. I watched several videos on youtube about this type of photography and learned a lot. Just search on it.

I should state that I have made a few changes to the site since i created this thread. I took some of the earlier tips onboard.

Well it is going to effect both negatively but of course there would be pros on that option too: if you don't need the long end you can have a 70-200 f2.8, it's a quite a bit cheaper depending which 70-200 u get (with or without OS) and it's a bit lighter.

Saw this video recently, it's great!

I love the fact that he's been published in National Geographic, not just one of his images but a 3 page spread! and been on tv, yet still uses a very ordinary dslr with reverse rings and 50mm lenses. Brilliant!

Just goes to show, it's not the tools, it's how you use them. Anyone could do this, but not everyone would have that passion.

The d3100 is pretty light (with the kit lens or a 35 f1.8) and you can just hold it in your hands so I guess it'll work alright if you don't tend to have neck and back pain usually.

Loose the background. Other then that. Pretty decent website you have. The words on that image is a bit hard to read. I had to actually lean forward to see it. And if you get older customers(im only 21), who don't have as great eye sight. It's gonna be even worse on their eyes.

Looking at it. The slideshow at first didn't want to load. I had to refresh the page 2 times. That might've been on my end though. I like how simple you have the slideshow. Instead of searching around, you give the person an idea of what your capable of right on the front page. I like that. Your albums, I like how it's simple click and slideshow is right their. No clicking constantly to look at photos. But, with Sports, After you click Youth Or college. You should narrow it down a bit. Instead of all these folders and stuff. Have a slideshow with captions at the bottom. Ex: Youth, have it to where its a slideshow and when you go from basketball to Tee ball. It says that in the first caption of the set. Other then that, it seems like a really good site. Your website shows you take your job serious and that's good.

Nikon sells an Infrared passthrough screen that hides the built in flash light.

You will be able to control your SB700 in SU4 mode without lighting your subject with the built in flash.

Here is a new video that was recently put on Youtube and you will see that you don't need expensive equipment or great deal of knowledge on photography to produce great photos.

People can be a bit touchy, on any forum, as you're getting people from all across the globe. Different traits and temperaments and all that. But in general it is relaxed here for sure, towards most other photo-forums.

In terms of basic RAW processing ie contrast, saturation, blacks, shadows, exposure etc iPhoto and Aperture are exactly the same. If your RAW files are coming out badly in iPhoto, then they will come out badly in Aperture too.

My edit version of photo, used just Camera Raw. Fixed WB, did some cropping and playing with contrast, exposure and shadows sliders. Didn't forget to add vignetting and gradient filter.

This is my very first PS edit and this is also my first Raw file edit for FroKnowsPhoto!

It has been cropped. Then I cleaned up the lips. Removed the greenery. Removed and balanced some of the hair decorations.

we mostly work as one person has main while the other does the bridesmaids/groomsmen. we both do the bridal shoot. wedding ceremony, we each take a side (i usually start at the back as they go down while the other gets them as they come up to alter, then i move to side closest to facing the bride.) reception is usually fair game. most my photos they are not looking at the camera being that im usually second photographer. also it can be distracting to have more then 1 so let the couple and bridal party know who is the main otherwise you might see a lot of were ones looking at you and everyone else at 2nd photog.

Overall I dig this photo. I like the color of the photo and the composition, except for one thing. I feel he is to much in the middle of the frame. If you put his head closer to the top it would make it better. Also I like this expression, it is interesting/funny.

Hey froreaders,I need some help. I have experimented with having my photos printed and ive not been happy. Just got a few back from Adorama and know they do great work so im sure im not exporting with the correct settings. I did very slight editing on purpose and the photos came back SUPER smooth and not very sharp when the photo is more sharp on my computer than actually printed. I would like to know what the best LR setting are for exporting to a print shop so the photos print in good quality. I didnt do any skin smoothing or reduce clairty so theres no replies about that. So a friend invited me to shoot a wedding with him next month and I quickly jumped on the opportunity for some experience (and a little cash). I don't know if this is the route that I'll eventually take my photography, but I like not being the only photographer there for my first time. He's only done a few weddings at this point, but he's at least learned a few things and gotten over the first wedding jitters. That being said, I think we'll do well.

My question is how do you wedding types go about shooting with two photographers present? Does one focus on the bride/ceremony while one does groom/candids, or what? I know there are a few experienced wedding photographers around here and I'm wondering what sort of plan you put in place for 2 shooters. Thanks
